Question words are pretty straightforward in Spanish. They are very similar to English. One big difference in that questions always begin with an upside down question mark in Spanish. Notice also that when a question word is in a question, it get an accent. However, when the same word is not in the question, it won’t get an accent.
¿quién? → who?
¿a quién? → to whom?
¿de quién? → whose?
¿qué? → what?
¿de qué? → of what? (…is it made of)
¿cuál? → which?
¿cuánto?/¿cuánta? → how much?
¿cuántos?/¿cuántas? → how many?
¿cómo? → how?
¿para qué? → why? (for what purpose)
¿por qué? → why? (for what reason)
¿dónde? → where?
¿adónde? → to where?
¿de dónde? → from where?
¿cuándo?/¿a qué hora?→ when?
¿Qué? vs ¿Cuál?
For the most part, ¿qué? is asking for a definition, description, or explanation. It is also usually used before nouns.
¿Qué haces? → What are you doing?
¿Qué es un chupacabras? → What is a chupacabras?
¿Qué significa “mocoso”? → What does “mocoso” mean?
¿Cuál? is usually used before the verb ser when you don’t want a definition. It is also used to mean “which” or to choose from a selection or a group.
¿Cuál te gusta? → Which one do you like? vs ¿Qué te gusta? → What do you like?
¿Cuál es tu teléfono? → What is your phone number?
¿Cuál es tu dirección? → What is your address?
¿Cuál es el más barato? → Which one is the cheapest?
¿Por qué? vs ¿Para qué?
Both of these word mean “why”. ¿Por qué? asks for a reason and ¿Para qué? asks for a purpose.
¿Por qué vas al parque? Porque quiero. → Why are you going to the park? Because I want to.
¿Para qué vas al parque? Para ver un concierto. → What are you going to the park for? In order to see a concert.
Exclamations
You can also use question words as exclamations. Remember, exclamatory words (que, cuanto, and cuan) have accent marks when used as an exclamation. Exclamations, similar to questions, have a upside down exclamation mark to start the sentence (¡). If you modify a noun with an adjective, you can add tan or más to emphasize the point.
¡Qué día! → What a day!
¡Qué tonto! → How dumb!
¡Qué carro! → What a car!
¡Cuántos amigos tiene! → How many friends he has!
¡Qué carro tan (más) lindo. → What a pretty car!
It is not very common and generally only used in literary style, but when used before an adverb or adjective then que can be changed to cuan.
¡Qué rápidamente puede correr! → How quickly he can run!
¡Cuán rápidamente puede correr! → How quickly he can run!
by
