Preterit Irregulars 2

There are two more groups of irreguar preterit verbs.
1. This first group has no pattern of irregularity and consists of three basic verbs, ser, ir, dar, ver, and hacer. Notice that ser and ir are conjugated the same. You can tell the difference based on the context in which they are used.

fuiste fuisteis diste disteis viste visteis hiciste hicisteis
fue fueron dio dieron vio vieron hizo hicieron

*Note that there are no accents and that the third person singular of hacer is hizo.
1the meaning of querer in the preterit changes a little. It means to try unsuccessfully, or intend to do something, but not follow through.
2the meaning of saber in the preterit changes a little. It means “to find out/to learn of”.
3the meaning of tener in the preterit changes a little. It means to have, as in “I had a sandwich for lunch.” Remember that preterit is for specific actions, as opposed to conditions.
