Ser

In Spanish there are several verbs that would translate to English as “to be”. The first one to learn is the verb ser. It is a very common verb that is used for specific situations. To remember when and how to use ser use the acronym DOCTOR.

Descriptions (to describe the inherent qualities of an object.)

  • El libro es azul. The book is blue.

Occupations

  • Yo soy maestro. I am a teacher. (Note: don´t use the indefinite article when saying occupations. Yo soy un maestro.)

Characteristics

  • Ella es muy linda. She is very pretty.

Time

  • Es la una y media. It is one thirty.

Origin

  • Nostros somos de Chile. We are from Chile.

Relationships

  • Ella es mi mamá. She is my mom.
